On July 7, 2016 the President of the Republic of Bulgaria H.E. Rosen Plevneliev and the President of the State of Israel H. E. Reuven Rivlin, who was on a state visit to Bulgaria, opened in Sofia a Monument of salvation dedicated to the Bulgarian Jews saved during the Second World War. Identical monument is expected to be placed in Tel Aviv. President Plevneliev pointed out that the rise of two identical monument in Sofia and Tel Aviv will forever show that it is within the reach of every person to change history and to make the world a better and fairer place and that the worst evil can be prevented if the resistance is active and assertive. „In 1943 the Bulgarian society saved not just its neighbors and friends, but also saved itself as it always has been and always want to be – tolerant, hospitable, humane, “said H.E. Rosen Plevneliev.

Hours later, the Israeli President H.E. Reuven Rivlin and his wife were guests of the Jewish community in Bulgaria. They were welcomed warmly at the Central Sofia Synagogue. In his speech to the community President Rivlin said: “Today I met with your government leaders who continue to be strongly committed to you, as many of them were involved with the Jewish community over the years of your joint history and moreover they continue to support the State of Israel since its creation, for which I am sincerely grateful to them.”
